Father Knows Best
Upon returning home after graduating from college in 2007, I stayed with my parents. One piece of advice my father gave me while living at home was to stack my money until I was not able to jump over it. When I decided to move out in 2013, one of the questions he asked was: Brittani, can you jump over your money? I replied yes, I can actually step over it daddy. I could sense the disappointment even though he never said it aloud. I was disappointed in myself.
At home 5 1/2 years and all I had to show was little savings, a good credit score, and a paycheck consumed my monthly payments. You see growing up, I was taught to pay bills on time, save and have good credit. But I lacked the steps to obtain true financial peace and wealth. So as I embark on this new life, it is my mission to reach back and inform others that financial peace is available in every home and every neighborhood if you are willing to work.

It Takes a Village
As a young athlete and scholar, there were a lot of opportunities available to me that at the time I had no idea how valuable they were. I was surrounded by an awesome village and I truly believe the individuals in my village did the absolute best they could by me with what they had available. But as we all know, a person can’t give you what they don’t have nor can they teach you what they don’t know themselves. So, because I didn’t have the proper guidance in a lot of situations, I slipped through the cracks in some areas and missed out on some opportunities that would have completely changed the trajectory of my life. Now, because I know what I know, I have a responsibility to step up and fill in all the informational gaps I can so that others don’t fall through the cracks unnecessarily. I believe that strong family units and community togetherness are the keys to success. Like Jay-Z said, no one wins when the family feuds.
